
Earlier this month, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) announced Dr Sarah Teichmann as the recipient of the FEBS | EMBO Women in Science Award 2023.

It is a great honour to run our annual Summer Studentships programme, which provides opportunities for undergraduates to experience working in a laboratory and to undertake their own research project – all whilst supporting additional support to our current and former Fellows!

Former Fellow, Professor Barry Potter, has been elected to an Honorary Fellowship of the British Pharmacological Society (BPS), the primary UK learned society concerned with research into drugs and their mechanism of action.

The Lister is saddened to hear of the death of Edward Guinness CVO, who was a Governor from 1969 until his retirement from the board in June 2001. He died peacefully at home in Hertfordshire on 29th December.

Professor John Iredale became the Lister Institute’s Chair in September 2022. A few months into the role, we caught up with him to hear his aspirations for his tenure.

The highlight of our year, as ever, was in awarding the Lister Prizes to our Fellows! In 2022, we received 82 applications and were in a position to award eight Fellowships – a new record for us.

Judith was invited to speak as a Special Guest on behalf of the Institute at a recent international microbiology conference about the links between Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister.

Stephan took a break from setting up for undergraduate admissions to speak to us about his experience of winning the 2020 Lister Prize.

On November 22, the Microbiology Society announced its 2023 Prizes, and we were delighted to see Lister Fellows Dr Tanmay Bharat and Professor Ravi Gupta receive the accolade.
