About Us

The Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine is a UK medical research charity that supports high quality young researchers through competitive prize fellowships. Our aim is to further understanding and progress in preventive medicine by promoting excellence in biomedical research in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Founded in 1891 the Lister Institute was the first medical research charity in the UK, and we have supported a wide variety of pioneering research into areas including rabies, nutrition and vitamins, blood products, molecular biology, genetics and DNA. We are a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and you can find out more about the Lister Institute’s history here.

Our research prizes are awarded annually to leading figures from across the biomedical sciences. The awards help propel high-performing researchers to the forefront of their fields, and over 60% of our former Fellows now hold prestigious Chair positions.

The community of current and former Lister Fellows meet on an annual basis to network and collaborate on research and projects across academia, facilitated and supported by our dedicated staff and advisory boards.
