Our Leadership

John Iredale

Professor Sir John Iredale BM (Hons), DM, FRCP (Lond), FRCP (Ed), FMedSci, FRSE, MAE

Chairman

John took on the role of Chairman of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in 2022. He currently holds the Chair of Experimental Medicine at the University of Bristol. From Jan 2022-Oct 2023 he was seconded to UKRI where he acted as the interim Executive Chair of the MRC, prior to this he was Pro Vice-Chancellor for Health and Life Sciences in Bristol. His research interests are focused on tissue scarring and regeneration and he has published extensively on these subjects. Professor Sir Iredale was, in the past, the Regius Chair of Medical Science, Dean of Clinical Medicine and Vice Principal Health Services at the University of Edinburgh where he led the Medical School.

Murray Legg

Mr Murray Legg BSc, FCA

Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance and Investment Committee

Murray joined the Lister Institute formally in September 2020 as Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance and Investment Committee. He is a chartered accountant who spent 35 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers until retiring in 2013. As a partner with PwC he held a variety of senior management, governance and client facing roles auditing and advising large UK listed and unlisted companies. He was a member of the PwC international network’s Global Governance Board, and he also served on the PwC UK firm’s governance body. Murray is non-executive chairman of GlobalData plc and previously chaired its audit committee. Until October 2024 he was a non-executive director and audit committee chair of SES Water.

Anne Rosser

Professor Anne Rosser PhD, FRCP

Chair of the Scientific Committee

Anne took on the role of Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Lister Institute in September 2025. Anne is Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at Cardiff University and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the University Hospital of Wales. She undertook her medical training and PhD at Cambridge University and completed specialist training at the National Hospital for Neurology in London and Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge. She moved to Cardiff in 2001, where she directs the Cardiff University Brain Repair Group and co-directs the Wales B.R.A.I.N. Unit, which aims to deliver therapeutics into the brain in neurological conditions. She has a special interest in regenerative medicine, especially with respect to the neurodegenerative condition Huntington’s disease, and she is current chair of the European Huntington’s disease Network.

Our Staff

The Lister Institute employs one full-time and two part-time members of staff, supported by our Governing Body and two committees.

Julie Goodley

Julie Goodley

Director

Julie joined the Lister in 2025. She has worked in senior leadership roles in research and research management in charities and universities and most recently working as Associate Assistant Principal in a Multi-Academy trust and as a chemistry teacher. Prior to moving into teaching where she was responsible for Early Career and Overseas Teachers, Julie worked at Cancer Research UK as Head of Clinical Trials, as Head of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Clinical Studies Groups, and as a Research Fellow at King’s College Medical School and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is a published author of a book, and journal articles in palliative care and on the conduct of clinical trials in the EU. Julie is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

With a background in public health, clinical trials, research funding and most recently in a secondary school, she has spent her career nurturing talent—first in research, then in teaching, and now at the Lister.

Nicola King

Nicola King

Head of Operations

Nicola joined the Lister Institute in 2020 and is the first point of contact for all queries. She runs the operations and governance of the Institute, including planning the studentship programme, co-ordinating the Fellowships and organising the AGM.

Nicola previously worked for NHS Professionals for over 5 years. They are a managed staff-bank service provider owned by the Department of Health and Social Care. Her role as Head of Client Relations involved managing the temporary staffing teams for 7 Trusts across Hertfordshire and Essex, this included working with them to reduce their reliance on agency workers and increase shifts worked via the bank in order to save the NHS money.

Joanna Morgan

Joanna Morgan

Accountant

Jo joined the Lister Institute in August 2025 as the Accountant. She is responsible for managing all financial statements including income and expenditure analysis, preparing budget and forecasts, and ensuring compliance with all financial regulations.

Jo previously worked within the Agriculture sector for 5 years, and prior to this worked for 18 years in the Oil & Gas industry. As a qualified CIMA accountant her roles throughout her career included financial leadership and partnering with the business to drive strategy, sales & margin performance, and cost management. Many aspects of her roles involved supporting others in managing change, with a watchful eye on the health and wellbeing of the whole team.

The Committees

Responsible for overseeing the research prize application process.

Scientific Committee

Assisting with all financial matters pertaining to the Institute including the annual budget and research awards.

Finance and Investment Committee

Research Prizes

The Lister Institute’s competitive research prizes give young scientists the opportunity to develop their potential through flexible funding over a five-year period. The awards are aimed at younger,  researchers in the early years of running their own groups, for whom receipt of the prize would make a significant difference to their research work.
