Lister Summer Studentship FAQ’s

Application Process

Who can apply?

Any Lister Fellow or Former Fellow can apply for funding.

Eligibility

Are undergraduate students eligible for this scheme?

Yes, the Lister Summer Studentship scheme is aimed at undergraduates.

Would third and final year undergraduate students be eligible to apply?

The purpose of the studentship is to encourage undergraduates to take up a career in research.  Where that decision has not yet been made the scheme would provide a great opportunity for an undergraduate student to experience working in a top laboratory and to undertake their own project.

Would I still be eligible to apply given that I am in my final year and intend to pursue a master’s degree?

The purpose of the studentship is to encourage undergraduates to take up a career in research.  Where that decision has not yet been made the scheme would provide a great opportunity for an undergraduate student to experience working in a top laboratory and to undertake their own project.

Funding

When is the funding paid?

The award of £3000, is typically paid in June directly to the host institution. The host institution is responsible for paying the student according to their own policies.

Is the £3,000 stipend paid to me directly alongside any potential university funding?

The award of £3000, is paid directly to the host institution at the commencement of the studentship. The host institution is responsible for paying the student according to their own policies.

Is the funding specifically for the studentship award or for the project in general?

The funding enables students to spend time working in a Fellow’s laboratory during the summer holiday period. This provides an opportunity for Lister Fellows to receive additional support for their research. It also provides a great opportunity for an undergraduate student to experience working in a top laboratory and to undertake their own project. Monies must only be used for the support of the student and  their associated research project, including consumables.

Does the  funding have to be secured individually?

Applications must be made by the Lister Fellow via the Lister online application form.

Is the scheme primarily on-site or online?

The studentship scheme is to fund a project devised by one of our fellows in their own laboratory.

Duration

What is the Studentship duration?

The studentships must run for a minimum of 6 weeks, and no more than 10.

Is there was a specific time period which the project should occur in, and does this  affect the way the funding will be distributed
(for example if I completed the project with a week’s gap in the middle, as opposed to the full period with no breaks).

Students will spend between 6 – 10 weeks working in a Fellow’s laboratory during the summer holiday period. The host, will devise the project and determine whether or not the weeks run consecutively.

After the Studentship has finished

Can you tell me about the Lister student poster session?

All Lister Summer Students will have the opportunity to present their posters during the poster session at the Annual Fellows Meeting held in September in Oxford. Invitation to the Annual Meeting will be sent to the Fellows / Former Fellows who will invite their students. All students that present their posters at the Annual Fellows Meeting will receive certificates during the autumn after the meeting.

What are the reporting obligations?

Supervisor and student reports will need to be submitted for all participants that have completed the Lister Summer Studentship scheme. Templates will be emailed to supervisors and students via the online system in September following completion of the scheme.
