In recent news, former member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Professor Nick Lemoine, was awarded a CBE, and the Committee’s Chair, Professor John Iredale, has been appointed interim Executive Chair of the Medical Research Council.
Professor Nick Lemoine named in New Year’s Honours List
We were very pleased to hear that a former member of the Lister’s Scientific Advisory Committee, Professor Nick Lemoine, was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours List 2022.
Nick was honoured for his services to clinical research, due in large part to his role throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
He currently serves as Medical Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network, where he played a key role in organising the NIHR’s response to the pandemic. He chaired the Urgent Public Health group, which identified and ensured the delivery of the 100 most vital COVID-19 studies. He also led the Long COVID awards scheme which has invested over £50 million into 19 studies on this little understood disease.
Nick’s CBE also reflects his longer-term contributions to clinical research. A world leader in pancreatic cancer research, his pioneering work into understanding the genetics of this disease aims to improve the poor outlook for patients. Understanding which molecules and genes are involved in the development and progression of pancreatic cancer will help Nick’s team identify potential new targets for therapy, in particular those that stop the cancer from spreading in the body.

Nick Lemoine
Nick is the Director of the Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary University of London. He is also Director of Research & Development for Cancer at Barts Health NHS Trust, the largest NHS Trust in the country. He was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2006.
John Iredale appointed as MRC’s interim Executive Chair
Chair of the Lister’s Scientific Advisory Committee, Professor John Iredale, has recently been appointed interim Executive Chair of the Medical Research Council (MRC).
The announcement was made just before Christmas. John has been on the MRC’s council since 2016. His personal research interests are focused on tissue scarring and regeneration and he has published extensively on these subjects.
John will temporarily step down as Pro-Vice Chancellor for Health and Life Sciences at the University of Bristol for up to six months while the MRC recruit a permanent candidate. He has served on the Lister Institute’s Scientific Advisory Committee since 2013 and became its Chair in 2018.
